Advocating for Homeless Veterans Today

Steven Spielberg

Today, a lot of attention is being paid to the plight of homeless veterans. Unfortunately, there are lots of people who come back from tours of Duty overseas only to realize that they are having a difficult time finding a place to live, getting a job, or getting a hot meal. That is why everyone needs to help homeless veterans in need. That is where Richard Wakeley is stepping up to make a difference. What are some of the biggest reasons why homeless veterans are having challenges adapting to normal society, and what can be done to help them?

Administrative Dysfunction

First, it is critical to take a look at some of the reasons why homeless veterans are having a difficult time accessing the resources they need. The reality is that there is a tremendous amount of dysfunction that all government levels. Veterans have a hard time accessing the health services they need. They may have been exposed to toxic chemicals overseas, and they might have suffered serious battle wounds. Without access to medical services, it is difficult for veterans to adjust to normal society.

Volunteering at Shelters

Because the government often cannot provide veterans with the resources they deserve, people need to volunteer at local shelters. When veterans do not have a place to go at night, they often visit a local homeless shelter. That is where they can get a bed, a hot meal, and a place to rest until the next day. Sometimes, homeless shelters also provide veterans with information on opportunities for a job in the area. That way, they can generate an income and support themselves once again.

Providing Training and Job Opportunities

According to Wakeley, providing better friends with training programs and job opportunities is also important. Veterans may have a difficult time adapting to civilian society because they do not necessarily have a job waiting for them when they come home. Even though they have a lot of useful skills, they might not be skills that an employer is looking for. Therefore, veterans must take advantage of training programs that can help them compete for a job when they return from a tour of duty overseas. With access to job and training programs, Richard believes that veterans will have the ability to support themselves.

Looking to the Future

Clearly, there are a lot of changes that need to be made for homeless veterans to have access to the services they need. Even though the government needs to step up to make some changes, it is also important for average citizens to donate their time and resources to help homeless veterans. Whether this is volunteering at a soup kitchen, working in a homeless shelter, or providing them with a job, there are ways to make a significant difference in the lives of veterans everywhere. Everyone should take a look at opportunities available in their local community to help homeless veterans in need.
